The British 17-pounder was the most powerful Allied anti-tank gun of World War II, developed to counter heavily armored German tanks like the Tiger and Panther. Its 76.2mm barrel fired projectiles at extremely high velocity, giving it exceptional penetration. This was further enhanced by advanced Armour-Piercing Discarding Sabot (APDS) ammunition, which used a tungsten core to defeat the thickest armor.
Deployed as a towed artillery piece from 1943, the 17-pdr is most famous for its use as a tank gun. Most notably, it armed the Sherman Firefly, a modification that gave Allied armored units a formidable answer to German heavy tanks in the Normandy campaign and beyond.
